Prolactin levels: Serum prolactin is only released by inhibition of the "prolactin inhibition hormone", for lactation, and in some instances by a pituitary tumor which prevents (secondary to pressure caused by the tumor) the inhibition factor from being produced, allowing increased prolactin. The general rule is to repeat testing unless the prolactin level exceeds 100. In that case, surgery may be indicated.
