If a blockage: is found which can be treated with a stent...this can be done at the same time....if there are multiple blockages or its in some positions "open" (surgical) angioplasty will be scheduled for later!
Hope this is helpful

Diagnose and fix: The angiogram is a roadmap of the inside of the artery showing where the narrowings and blockages are. The angioplasty is a stretching of the artery at the narrowing to open it up. Angiogram to diagnose first, then fix with the angioplasty.

A 46-year-old member asked:
What is an angiogram versus an angioplasty?

Dr. Richard Sandersanswered

X-ray vs. treatment: Angiogram is x-ray of a blood vessel to establish a diagnosis of what is wrong. In contrast, angioplasty is repair of a blood vessel. It can be done by an open operation where a narrowed artery is opened, the narrow area cut out, and a patch sewn to widen the artery. Also can be done by a balloon catheter, passed via a needle, to compress the plaque& keep vessel open with a stent.

Angioplasties : These procedures are indicated when the symptoms are not controlled by medical therapy. If it's indicated, the symptoms severity would dictate the acuity of the procedure.
