What are the steps of an endoscopy?

Endoscopy: Intake. Intravenous. Sedation. Procedure. Recovery. The procedure involves a mouthpiece being placed in your mouth to protect your teeth. The scope is then carefully inserted into the mouth and into the esophagus. It is then advanced into the stomach and duodenum. Biopsies or other therapies can be done during the procedure. It can take 5-10 minutes or longer. Some docs use a spray for the throat.

Many: Step one is informed consent where risks, benefits and alternatives are discussed. Next is conscious sedation where an IV is placed and medication is given until you are comfortable. Once you are resting comfortably, the procedure is performed. Last is recovery where you wake up and review procedure findings with your doctor. Someone must then drive you home because of the meds received.
