Tough question: In my opinion, the best long term reversible contraceptives are the levonorgestrel intrauterine devices. There are 3 different dosages on the market. The lowest dose lasts for 3 years, the other two last for 5 years. All of them should improve or eliminate heavy periods. But some people do gain weight even from the very low dose of progestin inside the IUDs.
