What to do if i was just diagnosed with diabetes and now my doctor wants me to see an ophthalmologist?

Diabetes: Diabetes is a leading cause of irreversable blindness due to retinal disease. Patients with type 2 diabetes may have had high blood sugars for years before diagnosis and may have already developed retinal disease prior to diagnosos. Generally diabetics should be seen by an ophthalmologist at least annually.

Good idea: Ophthalmologists are trained to recognize early signs of disease in the eye. The exam should include a dilation of the pupils and measure of the eye pressure and appearance of the retina. It is important to have a yearly dilated exam. This allows us to recognize disease in the early stage when it is possible to treat it. Results can be excellent, but monitoring the retina is the first step.
