A member asked:

3 yr old has horizontal nail dents on all fingers had scarlet fever 2 mos ago and cold 3 weeks ago. is it related? what do we need to do/test?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Nail lines: Yes, horizontal nail lines may be related to scarlet fever. These lines are called beau's lines and they happen any time something life fever, infection, medications or other causes interrupt the normal growth of the nail. These will eventually grow out. There are other conditions that can cause nail plate changes like bacterial or fungal infections. Please show your baby to a dermatologist.
