Trazodone is…: Pregnancy category c which means animal tests have shown adverse effects on fetus but there are no controlled studies in humans. Discuss w/ your OB the benefits of the med versus its risks.

Category C: Trazodone has been assigned to pregnancy category c by the fda. Animal studies have revealed fetal resorption in rats & an increase in congenital anomalies in rabbits at doses 15 to 50 times the normal human dose. There are no controlled data in human pregnancy. Trazodone should only be given in pregnancy when benefit outweighs risk. I would not recommend use.
