Many: Lowers blood pressure heart rate increases wellbeing improved bonding. But only in the context of a consensual relationship where safety is considered. So don't feel pressured if you're not in a situation where you are wanting to. It's much healthier in that case to abstain

Be honest: It is often true that the hardest things to do are the best. Be honest with your partners about your feelings and why. Reassure him that it isn't about loving him. Take your time. Start slow.

You can't: Unfortunately, there is no reliable way to predict. Even the ultrasound can be wrong occasionally.

Abstaining from masturbation/porn/sex for mental/physical benefits, what to do?

1 doctor answer2 doctors weighed in
Dr. Ed Friedlander
Pathology 44 years experience
Monitor yourself: A normal man finds it difficult, usually impossible, to practice this degree of abstinence for more than a few days. There are no physical benefits and you'll be uncomfortable both physically and mentally, perhaps even becoming unable to focus on things you need to do. If you're married and you are refusing your partner, your behavior is unacceptable.

How about this instead? Put away those dumb pictures of ideal bodies, and think about really loving another human being. Vary your technique to prepare your body for different possible partners -- or if you're married, get couples counseling for your relationship. Hit the gym hard, eat more sensibly and diet, and get your body looking great. You'll be acting like a REAL grown man. Best wishes.

A 38-year-old member asked:

Are there mental or physical benefits to abstaining from masturbation/porn/sex?

Dr. Ed Friedlander

All in moderation: This is part of life for almost all men after puberty. If a man tries to go without any ejaculation for more than a few days, he usually has trouble working / studying / sleeping. Tasteful erotica, or thinking of that one special person (present / future) is more uplifting than the dead-end junk that's pornography. Casual sex is dangerous and soon disgusts most men. Choose wisely in all things.
