Exercise in futility: It depends on where the scar is. Sometimes surgical revision helps. Sometimes cortisone injection helps. For burns, pressure therapy with silicone often helps. Once there is a scar there is always a scar. The goal is to make it less obvious.

Excision to improve: Although there are a variety of different modalities that may lighten or flatten the scar using steroid injections, topical treatments or lasers, the only definitive way may be via excision. Primary closure may necessitate the use of tissue expansion.
