Rarely fatal: Community acquired pneumonia (CAP) is rarely fatal; and when it is, deaths occur mostly in people with other health problems, such as prior lung disease like emphysema. However, rare deaths occur in otherwise healthy people. But once antibiotic treatment is started, there is little risk of death. If you or someone in your family has CAP, discuss with the doctor -- but probably no serious worry.
