A member asked:

Having major surgery. not allergic to advil (ibuprofen) or aspirin. reacted to pain meds in hosp b4. not sure what meds tho. is there an allergy test to confirm?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Surgery meds: No allergy tests are available to detect pain medication allergies. Some people have adverse reactions to pain medications like narcotics that are not true allergies. You should discuss all your medications and your past reactions with both your anesthesiologist and surgeon prior to the procedure. Aspirin and advil/motrin are avoided prior to procedure due to potential bleeding complications.
