Virus: A viral gastroenteritis often takes several days to a week to resolve. Treatment is symptomatic with rest, good room temperature fluid intake, avoidance of harsh roughage, drinking flat ginger ale to settle nausea, and taking kaopectate or imodium as needed for continuing diarrhea control. See a physician if diarrhea persists for longer than a week.

Diarrhea: Sometimes viral gastroeneteritis can last 72 hours and even some bacterial diarrheas do not get treated ,but you must keep up with the fluid losses by drinking 3- 4 liters /day of solute. if you are having > 4 bowel movements a day be seen at urgent care where they can take stool cultures to insure it is not treatable with cipro or azithromycin (camphylobacter) and can give you IV fluids.

Gastroenteritis. : Viral gastroenteritis can generally last 3-5 days. If lasts longer without significant resolution, then you'd need to be examined locally and perhaps undergo testing.
