Warfarin is the: oldest anticoagulant (i.e. blood thinner) and most often used medication for PE. However there are newer anticoagulating options called factor Xa inhibitors available now including Xarelto and Eliquis (oral) as well as Arixtra or fondaparinux (Injectable). There are also thrombin inhibitors such as Pradaxa (oral) and low molecular weight heparins such as Lovenox or enoxaparin (injectable).
