Not very: HFM syndrome is triggered by various strains of enterovirus (gut virus) that are most often experienced in childhood with mild disease & long term immunity. When an adult is not immune they can become infected but the illness is usually more a distraction than a risk. Diabetes should not make the illness worse, but may alter daily blood sugar levels.
