A member asked:

Why does my vagina smell like ammonia during my period? the rest of the month it does not smell like that.

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Vaginal smell: Menstrual blood can release free ammonia gas when degraded by bacterial and enzymatic action. It is exacerbated if kept on the pad longer or in some using oral contraceptives or certain supplements or diets. If it bothers you greatly, you can also ask your doctor to check your liver and kidney blood tests to make sure there isn't a problem there.
