Dr. Dennis Diaz
ENT and Head and Neck Surgery 38 years experience
No: Mastoiditis causes pain behind or around the ear and is usually associated with redness and swelling behind the ear as well as a history of ear disease. Acute or even chronic mastoiditis rarely is the cause of a generalized headache.
A 35-year-old member asked:

What happens if mastoiditis isn't treated?

2 doctor answers3 doctors weighed in
Dr. Rodney Diaz
ENT and Head and Neck Surgery 22 years experience
Potential badness: Potentially serious complications, including meningitis, brain abscess, permanent hearing loss, death. Caveat: "mastoiditis" diagnoses radiographically only (ct or mri) is not necessarily the mastoiditis i'm talking about. If you have true clinical or coalescing mastoiditis, you would be in hospital right now. If it's from a ct report, you should talk to your pmd or see an ENT to clarify.

None: Mastoiditis is usually an extension of infection in the middle ear. It can lead to deafness and more seriously the infection can spread to the brain. Please consult your doctor.
A 35-year-old member asked:

What are the tests for mastoiditis?

Dr. James Sidman
Pediatric ENT and Head and Neck Surgery 40 years experience
CT scan: If there is not clear cut swelling behind the ear, then ct scan is the best way to diagnose mastoiditis. Cloudy mastoid cells on ct is not mastoiditis, that is just an ear infection. If there is breakdown of the tiny air sacs of the mastoid bone on ct, then the diagnosis of mastoiditis is correct.
A 44-year-old member asked:

What are the symptoms of mastoiditis?

1 doctor answer2 doctors weighed in
Dr. Ronda Alexander
ENT and Head and Neck Surgery 19 years experience
Look to the ear: Acute mastoiditis has fever, ear pain, tenderness behind the ear, and the ear may even stick out more than it normally does. Chronic mastoiditis shows with drainage which persists despite common treatments. See your ear doctor for chronic but get immediate care for an acute case as it may need urgent surgery.
