Retinal vessel chang: Poorly controlled diabetes can lead to thinning of blood vessels in the back of the eye which pouch out (microaneurysms) or leak. This can cause edema or scarring and lead to severe visual loss unless treated. Treatment can be very effective and this is why diabetics are encouraged to get a yearly eye examination by an ophthalmologist.
