Simple but not easy: Calories taken in, minus calories used up, equals fat gain or fat loss or a steady state. If taking in more calories than one is burning each day, he gains fat. If calories in equals calories out, his weight doesn't change. If he eats and drinks fewer calories than burned each day, he loses fat... so this is the answer! Burn calories, all day long. Burn lots of calories, and no "diet" is needed.
