Very rare: In general, HSV is transmitted only by direct skin to skin contact with an infected person, like kissing or sex. The virus is rarely if ever transmitted by sharing drinking or eating utensils. Also not by shared towels, clothing, or toilets. Whenever HSV is caught, symptoms usually start 3-5 days later, sometimes up to 10-14 days.
