A member asked:

How is complicated grief defined? lost mom to brain cancer abt 9 yrs ago & still have occasional sad times as a result. is that a normal response?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Sounds normal: This is pathological if and only if you find yourself unable to function because of your sorrow. If the latter is the case, a short course of cognitive-behavioral therapy or similar insight-type therapy may be in order. Since you recognize this may be problematic, you have insight and motivation, and your prognosis would be good.
