Flat stool: Flat stool shape may occur in people with irritable bowel syndrome and infrequently with diverticulitis possibly related to spasm. These would be temporary occurrences, and with persistently flat stools,especially if a change in the prior usual stool shapes, colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy would be indicated to check for obstructing lesions like growths or scarring of the colon.
