Unlikely, but...: Expiration dates for Mirena (levonorgestrel) (and all drugs) generally are very conservative. It does not cease to be effective on the expiration date; protection probably continues for at least a few weeks (ask your doc or check the Mirena (levonorgestrel) website). Still, don't take chances; get a new one ASAP. Brown discharge suggests infection (e.g. STD and others), so get it checked out ASAP, maybe at same time as new Mirena (levonorgestrel).
