Very different: Melanomas usually start in a pigmented lesion (not always). And slowly grow and may bleed or ulcerate. Fungal infections begin in moist creases or folds and have white arches or raised itchy pink skin and usually respond to treatment by keeping the area clean and dry whereas a melanoma will not.
