See below : Your question is a good one and this is one area where good scientific studies are lacking. You're correct: in most men, pre-cum originates from Cowper's gland which does not produce sperm. But viable sperm has definitely been noted in some men's precum which is likely EITHER viable sperm remaining in the urethral tract from prior ejaculation OR from an overflow of sperm-containing prostate fluid.
