Disc disease: Coughing can aggravate a bulging disc in your back and cause back pain. Just coughing vigorously can tear muscles and ligaments in the chest wall causing pain as well.

Several causes: The pain could be due to pleurisy (inflammation of the lung's lining), bronchitis, pneumonia, a fractured rib or a pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lung). If the whole process is not improving daily, see your physician.
