I read somewhere that you can get blood poisoning by holding in your flatulence. is this true or just a tall tale?

No: That sounds full of hot air. In a normal healthy person, the gas will likely leak out the butt before enough pressure builds up to do any damage. In a sick person, or somebody with an intestinal obstruction... well, who knows what bad things can happen with excess gas... but that isn't a case of a normal person willfully holding her gas in.
