See answer: There are a number of causes for heavy or prolonged periods including Fibroids, Endometriosis, Cervical/uterine polyp, PCOS, Hypothyroidism. Often no specific cause is found. Some of the treatment options are: NSAIDS, Combined oral contraceptives, Oral progesterone, progesterone containing IUD and tranexamic acid. See GYN: You can take ibuprofen or other nsaids for the pain that are available over the counter. However, other hormonal pills will require a prescription. You can see your GYN for further work up that can ensure you dont have any polyps or other causes of irregular bleeding at your age. Best wishes Dr M
