Depo Provera (medroxyprogesterone): If the first dose is given during the first seven days of the menstrual period, it prevents pregnancy immediately. A woman who receives her first Depo injection after the seventh day of her period should use a second form of contraception for seven days. Most women have pharmacologically active drug levels and relatively impermeable cervical mucus within 24 hours after injection.
