Maybe viral: The short answer is that it could be anything. I would like to know more about it to be able to tell. In general, an infection of the tonsil is either bacterial (where you need antibiotics) or viral (will get better on its own). Each of them has its characteristics. Physicians can also test for streptococcus infection very quickly in the clinic. If it doesn't get better shortly, check with ur doc

Doctor can check: A sore throat can be evaluated by a primary care doctor (or an ear-nose-throat doctor) to see what the cause might be. Sometimes it is a strep throat bacterial infection, in which case antibiotics would be needed. Other possibilities include a tonsillar abscess, a viral infection, a throat ulcer, etc... A doctor has to look at the throat to diagnose it. Meanwhile, lozenges may decrease hurting.
