About four days ago my nipples started to become really tender and sore, could not wearing a bra be the cause of this?

Yes: If your nipples are rubbing against an article of clothing that has an irritant contained therein, then yes. Sometimes the irritant is a poorly rinsed shirt or blouse after laundering that still contains soap embedded within.
