Left upper arm: You may be dealing with an inflamed tendon in your shoulder if motions of the shoulder itself cause more discomfort. Another possibility is disc disease in your neck pressing on a nerve root causing referred pain down into the upper arm especially since numbness is also present. An orthopedic surgeon could evaluate you for both possibilities and order appropriate tests and treatment or a referral

Radiculopathy: The cause of pain and numbness in an arm is usually compression of a nerve(s) that supplies the extremity. As the nerve leaves leaves the spinal cord it is compressed by either a bulging or herniated disc or bony projections called osteophytes that occur with aging. The condition is called cervical radiculopathy. SEE: http://bit.ly/1yPwhcG
