Running is rough.: On the one hand, a grassy surface would be softer than concrete, or even a treadmill. On the other hand, the dirt underneath can be uneven so you can easily turn your ankle if you step on an unexpected bump of dirt. That being said, running is generally bad on the knees. You should try to keep your stride as horizontal as you can - don't bounce.
