Broad topic: Generally lactose intolerance is the commonest malabsorption disorder. Avoiding large amounts of one type of food decreases such risk, eg. Dairy group, fructose, wheat, fats etc. Now there are syndromes associated with colitis, surgery, short gut, congenital causes, that are beyond the scope of this discussion.

Many issues: The functioning gut will absorb the foods it processes when it is healthy.Af you have injury to the gut, from disease (cystic fibrosis, crohn's) , surgical loss, food allergies, food intolerances, poor absorption will occur.Gluten sensitivity is a timely topic. No 40 red food dye & lactose intolerance, the list goes on.Some malabsorption is transient, like after diarrhea , some is long term.
