Look different...: Herpes is caused by a virus and has a very distinct appearance. It looks like tiny red rimmed ulcerations in clusters. It is very painful. Folliculitis occurs in hair follicles. So every place where it hurts there will be a hair follicle. Folliculitis hurts but nothing like herpes. Herpes doesn't have hair follicles coming out of the ulcerations like folliculitis.
