Treating poison: Making a patient vomit may be part of the treatment for ingestion of many toxic substances depending upon when they were ingested. Syrup of ipecac was often given in hospital emergency departments for that purpose. The alternative was to insert a nasogastric tube for drainage of the stomach contents.
