Not necessarily: Condoms are advised to use when you first start any birth control method for back up contraception since it takes 7 days for any contraceptive to effectively work. Thereafter condom use is encouraged for prevention of STD transmission. Once you are continuing your birth control using a condom is your personal choice.

STD prevention: If you are not in a mutually monogamous relationship then condoms are needed to minimize STD transmission.
