Increase the dose: Assuming acyclovir or valacyclovir for suppression, during an outbreak you should increase the dose for a few days. Check with the doctor or clinic who prescribed it for the exact dose and duration. You can also ask if you should take a higher dose for ongoing treatment. For example, 1 g valacyclovir daily sometimes is more effective than 500 mg, especially if outbreaks are fairly frequent.
