Muscle strain: What you describe could be due to a strain of the muscles that contract when he jumps. There may be other muscle issues involved in the back. Could also be due to issues with the spine such as scoliosis. Sometimes issues with the domino organs could cause what you describe is well. That is a more unusual circumstance.

?Chostochondritis: Depends on his age and would need more details, however common causes of pain in this area are muscle strain, inflammation of the cartilage where it joins the breast bone (called costochondritis). Initial treatment could be with a short course of anti-inflammatory (such as ibuprofen) and GP review if pain persists > 1 week.
