I have had a bad bout of diarrhea since arriving in cuenca, ec - 8500 ft elevation. i'm not throwing up, though i have had sweats and chills and a minor headache and very little appitite. could it be the altitude?

Possibly, but:: Diarrhea is not due to Acute Mountain Sickness. Headache and loss of appetite may be signs of AMS but given the diarrhea it's likely all due to a viral gastroenteritis.
