Total myth: If you can accomplish a visual task in dimmer light, that will not harm the eyes in any way. If the dimmer light makes you more comfortable than go ahead and use it. Abraham Lincoln was said to have read by the dim light of a fire which seemed to cause him no eye or brain damage.
