I saw a quick glimpse of a few bumps on the back of my tongue. they were of varying sizes and not in a row but a group. is this normal or herpes?

Tongue lesions: These could be normal taste buds but without seeing them it would be difficult to say. Get them checked out.

Not herpes: The location suggests circumvallate papillae, but as you seem to know, those usually are in a row across the back of the tongue. For sure not herpes unless they turn into open sores within a day and very painful. My guess is nothing is abnormal, but see your doctor or dentist if you remain concerned.
