Yes: Q-tips should NEVER be inserted in an infants ear canal.At best you get a little wax out, but the relative size makes them work like a cannon ram rod,pushing most of the debris inside. You can also scrape the wall and trigger bleeding,or worse.

Never put anything: smaller than your elbow in your ear or your baby's ear, to paraphrase an old Southern saying. Wax is produced in the outer 3rd of the External Auditory Canal to protect the eardrums from wind & weather. Q-tips push wax toward the eardrum. A scratched canal may re-bleed if his pediatrician has to use a curette, a thin loop, to clean it to visualize that eardrum, but it will heal on its own.
