Membrane sweep: hello, membrane sweep separates the membranes of the sac around the baby from the lower end of the uterus just inside the cervix and is a old trick to get the labor started. The brown d/c is altered blood from the procedure and the unpleasant smell may be from a pre-existing infection or just blood in the vagina. See your OBGYN 'cos if well overdue he may want to do a formal induction ROM+pitocin
