Breakthrough: Breakthrough bleeding is technically bleeding due to "slightly-low" hormone levels, usually estrogen but sometimes progesterone. Most spotting on pills is break thru, but if you had, say a polyp, it could cause irregular bleeding that's not breakthrough.
