clean area: It takes about eight hours for food to go from your mouth to your anus. That's why you should have nothing to eat to allow your intestines to empty. Having a light breakfast will prevent low blood sugar, but is too short a time for that food to get down to the surgery site and cause your surgeon problems with contamination.

8 hour fast for GA: If you are having general anasthesia, most anasthesiologists want you to fast at least 6-8 hours for solids and 3-4 hours for liquids. However, some anasthesiologists request that you be npo after midnight. I would suggest that you speak to the assigned anasthesiologist for specifics.
