Likely a boil: It sounds as though you are describing a boil, which is an infected hair follicle. If it is a boil it will be tender. You can look on Google Images to see pictures of boils(But not pretty to look at). Herpes can also look like a raised area that usually causes a blister and ulcerates. Again>Google Images. If a boil, warm compresses will help it drain. If not improving see Dr.
