See answer: People with bipolar disorder are much more likely than the general population to be cigarette smokers. However this doesn't mean that nicotine worsens the disorder. Nicotine causes the release of many neurotransmitters and activates the brains reward system. It appears that patients with bipolar disorder(and schizophrenia) self medicate with nicotine for its sedative and euphoric effects.
