In or around lungs: Pulmonary edema is fluid seepage with in the lungs and pleural effusion is fluid build up around the lungs between chest wall and the lungs in the pleural space. Pulmonary edema can occur due to cardiac or renal dysfunction. Pleural effusion can be accompanied by Pulmonary edema or without it. There are many reasons for pleural effusion build up.

2 different things: Pleural effusion is fluid between the lung and the chest wall( the pleural space). Pulmonary edema is fluid in the lung( in the air space within the lungs )
