Hiccups: Hiccups are normally caused by irritation to the phrenic nerve. This nerve originates from the spinal cord in the neck (cervicals 3, 4 and 5) on both sides and travels down to innervate the diaphragm. Irritation to the nerve causes spasms in the diaphragm which results in hiccups.
