Different antibiotic: Ampicillin is not a great choice for adult prostatitis though it does work for some. Sometimes a culture helps, sometimes a trial of another antibiotic is reasonable because some bacteria don't show up on routine cultures (and need special media to grow in culture). Treatment for prostatitis can be of several weeks duration to eliminate the infection. See your doc or get a referral to a urologist
